Drunk Driving

One of the most common forms of imparied driving individuals usually think of is drunk driving, or driving under the influence of alcohol. Drunk driving occurs when a person gets behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming enough beer, wine, or hard liquor to change their blood alcohol level; the blood alcohol content (BCAC) of an individual measures how much alcohol is in the blood in the form of percentage. Typically, the more alcohol an individual consumes in a short amount of time — especially if it is in a high alcohol content beverage — the higher percentage seeps into the bloodstream before it can be digested by the liver. If your BAC level is higher than 0.08 percent at the time of driving (which according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is about four drinks' worth), you can be arrested for DUI.

Going out on the roads while drowsy can result in an individual having reduced alertness, missing traffic signals, falling asleep at the wheel, and/or losing control of the vehicle itself and causing injuries. As stated above, drivers who do not get enough sleep; consistently work night shifts or very long shifts; or operate commercial vehicles can fall victim to this type of imapred driving.

Distracted Driving

At Trillium Driving School, we know you most likely have heard about one or two common acts that fall under the umbrella of "distracted driving" — texting and talking on the phone — but there are several other ways in which an individual can be distracted while behind the wheel. In short, distracted driving involves any activity that can distract a driver from safely operating their vehicle or from keeping his or her eyes on the road. These visual, manual, or cognitive distracts can include:

• Looking at your phone's navigation system
• Changing your vehicle's radio station or otherwise adjusting the music
• Eating or drinking
• Using social media

The consequences of engaging in distracted driving, much like the other forms of impared driving discussed above, can result in missing traffic signals or signs and ultimately injury or death. Aside from this, there can be numerous legal or financial consequences. The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety details how our state has a "Hands-Free" law, illustrating how drivers cannot use their hands to use a mobile device while behind the wheel; drivers also cannot write or send texts, emails, social media or anything else of the sort while on the road. Violation of this law, passed in 2018, can result in fines and points on a person's license.
